I'm crazy about VEGEMITE!
Do you know vegemite? It is a very famous fermented food made in Australia. It is made from mixed vegetables and beer yeast, so it is full of vitamins, particularly, vitamin B. However, although it is good for your health, most of Japanese tourists in Australia or returnees from her don’t like it. They say it tastes too bad.
Why do they think so? That's because they get it wrong before eating it. They first think of it as something sweet like chocolate by the color and by seeing Australian friends spreading it on toasts and eating it.
So many Japanese tourists do the same thing, but, alas, vegemite is not chocolate at all! It smells bitter and tastes salty! It’s anything but what they expect before eating. That’s why they say it tastes too bad.
But, I found an article, which says vegemite tastes like miso and roast soy sauce, and goes well with Japanese food.
Because of the article, I had a completely different idea about vegemite before eating it. I thought of it as a kind of miso, and I decided to make fried vegetables or grilled chicken with it. Then I couldn’t help but trying it.
And I finally got one at a Seijo- Ishii supermarket yesterday.
As soon as I got home, I made fried vegetables with vegemite. The taste was good but it wasn’t as good as I expected.
After that, I made vegemite soup and grilled chicken with vegemite. But I still don’t know how much to use it when I cook those dishes.
Though I haven’t got the perfect food with vegemite yet, I’m very happy because I’m full of hope that someday I will make a delicious food by use of vegemite, and that idea makes me thrilled so much!
